Summer reading

I read 1984 by George Orwell and Gulliver's Travels by Jonathon Swift over the summer. 1984 was absolutely amazing. It was a novel that really showed the effects of a totalitarian government, but was mixed in with a story of the character's love and betrayal. The way he writes makes you love the characters and hurt when they fail. It makes you root for them to succeed. It's a very interesting look into the future if a totalitarian government was going to take over. He wrote this during the end of World War II and predicted that if a government such as Hitler's would take over the world, it would collapse and humans would be miserable forever. I would give this book a 8 or 9 on a scale of 1 to 10. I loved this and would recommend this novel to anyone. Gulliver's Travels was another story. This was a story of a man named Gulliver who travels to different fantasy lands and was a satire to criticize English government, society and human nature in general. Some of his points were very valid and still apply to today's society, but it could have been a lot shorter and more efficient. The satire was good, but it was incredibly boring in places and some of it I didn't understand because it was written so long ago. I would give this book about a 3 on a scale of 1 to 10 and wouldn't recommend it very highly to anyone.
